A letter from Laura ~
My mom told me, “Laura Ellen (she always called me by both names), life is for the living," and "Where there is breath there is hope.” How could she speak from this place of wisdom? Because she had lost her sister, her mom, her dad, and her precious baby son. She knew grief and she was preparing me for the great losses ahead.

When I found My partner John dead after he just waved goodbye to me as I left for school with a smile—about two years after my best friend Linda was killed on I-435 in the head-on collision—it was almost more than I could bear. Then, I lost by only living brother Greg and his son, my nephew Cody, 6 months apart.

This is why I went on to become a chaplain in 2006, channeling my grief into guidance for others. Receiving my training from St. Joseph Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri, and Calvary Bible College, I have ministered to many grieving families. In 2016, I became a Certified Stillbirth Doula. I perform funerals and Life Celebrations.

Now, in October of 2018, we are ready to start our new ministry, “Willow Brook Grief Retreat and Sanctuary,” in the Kansas City, Missouri area. If you would like to know more or want to get involved in this ministry, please email us at willowbrook10@gmail.com. Please visit our Willow Brook events page to see what event you may want to participate in.

I have recently written a book, Walking Through the Dark into the Light, to be released this October on Amazon. Not only is this book designed to help all those who are grieving, but all proceeds will go to Willow Brook Grief Retreat and Sanctuary. In addition to the grief retreat with workshops and a weekend stay option, we are adding an animal sanctuary. We have found that animals are very healing! Please help us in our endeavor to minister to the bereaved. We are here to offer hope and support.

Many Blessings,
Laura O'Dell
